What is Hearing Assistive Technology?

Now that we are UDL experts, we are going to take a closer in-depth look at specific assistive technologies.

With the diverse learning needs of students, technology is a great tool to help them learn. There are many different types of technology that can help students, particularly, hearing assistive technology (HAT), which helps individuals who have hearing losses. HAT includes alerting devices and telecommunication devices.

Students who are hard of hearing often have difficulty following classroom instruction due to poor acoustics, classroom layout and teacher style. They also are at a serious disadvantage during social interactions especially during classroom activities and expressing their opinions and thoughts. HAT can help students who are hard of hearing by enhancing the student's communication in the classroom. It can help by amplifying specific sounds while minimizing background distractions.
